Financier Peter Schiff fell short in his bid to stage a late come-from-behind rally in Connecticut’s three-cornered GOP Senate primary yesterday. Schiff, 47, reportedly spent close to a million dollars of his own money in his long-shot quest to wrest the Republican nomination from frontrunner Linda McMahon.
Hoping to pull off a last-minute miracle, Schiff frantically visited at least a dozen polling stations yesterday, pressing the flesh and eagerly asking one voter after another to ignore the polls and cast their ballots for him.
Unfortunately, McMahon’s mountain of cash — a Mt. Everest built on gullible, poorly-educated young males who generally earn less than $30,000 a year — proved too steep for the Austrian economist and chief global strategist of Euro Pacific Capital.
McMahon, the former CEO of the Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment who reportedly spent $24 million of her personal fortune to win the Republican nomination, was declared the winner a few minutes before 10 p.m., less than two hours after polls closed in the Nutmeg State.
With 704 of the state’s 742 precincts reporting, McMahon was garnering 58,206 votes, or 49 percent.
Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, who recently jumped back into the fray after suspending his campaign in late May, was running second with 33,358 votes, or 28 percent.
A number of Connecticut newspapers, including the widely-read Hartford Courant, had urged their readers to support the ex-congressman against the wealthy McMahon, a political novice.
Schiff, who was endorsed a few weeks ago by former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine and CEO of Forbes Inc., appears headed for a last-place finish, tallying a disappointing 26,956 votes, or 23 percent.
Schiff, a free-market economist who predicted the current recession, said repeatedly during the campaign that the United States is in the early stages of a depression and that the country will be facing a serious long-term economic crisis if it fails to adequately control government spending.
Schiff could have made a difference. CT residents must be brain dead, they are going to get more of the same representing them in Washington. Schiff represents the people that are fed up with the incompetence we have now.
I was looking forward to watching Schiff on CSPAN
What do you expect with fixed computer diebold voting machines?
I am disappointed that Mr.Schiff came last. Goes to show it is all about money..the candidate who has the most usually ends up winning. Better luck next time,Peter Schiff.
Unbelievable. Did anybody see the debates?
Schiff annihilated those chumps.
When are Americans going to become conscious? They are zombies. literally.
Wake up and fight for once in your lifetime!!
Problem is there is no problem appearing to many, Schiff was required if you realize how dire government debt spending is.
Most dont realise how badly run government has become so the mainstream trundles on unaware.
Linda lost the majority vote, unfortunately the opposition was split or it might have been different. I dont think she will go anywhere anyhow, a waste of time
Thanks Peter for all your effort. NOBODY will ever accuse you of not trying. You have done your bit to try and save your country. Let the chips now fall where the may. The majority will DESERVE whatever representation they end up getting. It seems that inspite of the last 2/3 years, a lot of people have still not woken up from their slumber. They are so going to wish they did by the time they get the chance to vote again.
Im about to cry, this shows how stupid people are. Democracy where morons rule, and people who have a 3 digit IQ are screwed by a sea of morons.
Big government triumphs again….such a shame!! Washintion needs representatives like Schiff more than ever!! Such a powerful voice of reason, I only hope he tries again!!
Does anyone know if Peter Schiff can still run as an independant?
independent that is
Peter Schiff is the only candidate I would vote for. He deserves to be Senator because of his predictions about the Economy. He was mocked and tyrannized on television for years, yet he was right.
I recommend people to read his books and determine for yourself how generous this gentleman is. I avoided the recession thanks to Peter, I wish many more did but they chose to listen to the propaganda and the incumbent politicians who still claim the recovery is underway.
I wish that Connecticut voted for him. Anyways, those who didn’t, are doomed to fail; cos Linda McMahon is another established candidate who’ll go to washinton and continue the insanity.
I liked your demo profile of the voter class for McMahon. The rest of us will just have to watch and see if they are still enamored of her when the bills come due.
I wonder if the fact that the votes are counted in secret had anything to do with the outcome in this election? No, certainly, the “news” media wouldn’t cover up election fraud as well as the fact that the votes are “counted” in secret, would it?
If you want to see proof that elections have been stolen, if you wonder why the government passes laws that virtually everyone opposes, like the bank bailout, or if you wonder why the government refuses to investigate and prosecute obvious crimes, like torture and murder, check out Why Does the Government Ignore Our Wishes? and don’t miss my short speech.
If you take a look, you’ll learn why they get away with horrible crimes. My article on torture includes a link to the U.S. Supreme Court case which explains how one of our stolen rights makes the difference between justice and injustice, between freedom and slavery.
Another nail in America’s coffin. Fools had a chance with a real American, they choose to continue the BS.
Shame on CT and Shame on America, they get what they deserve.
