As expected, Republican Dan Coats has surged into an early lead in the battle for Indiana’s open U.S. Senate seat as votes began trickling in shortly after the polls closed at 6 p.m. EST.
With less than one percent of precincts reporting, Coats, who has enjoyed a twenty-point lead in recent polls, has 3,716 votes to Democrat Brad Ellsworth;s 2,312. The Libertarian Party’s Rebecca Sink-Burris, who waged a spirited campaign, is garnering 210 votes in early reporting.
