Former Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer was not allowed to participate in last Thursday’s Fox News presidential primary debate in South Carolina. That’s despite Roemer’s campaign putting up $25,000 to qualify for the South Carolina ballot, one of two barriers to entry in the debate.
The debate organizers also required potential candidates to poll at 1% in five national surveys, and the colorful former governor didn’t make the cut.
So what’s a candidate to do when they’ve been excluded from a debate?
How about stage a protest? Try to storm into the room and get arrested?
Not Roemer’s style.
Instead, the long-shot candidate running a shoe-string campaign on $100 contributions (seriously – he won’t accept anything larger) decided to stage his own alternative debate. He would record his own answers to the questions asked at the real debate in real time and then post them on YouTube.
The result is an entertaining series of 22 video clips in which Roemer proves he’d be a credible and serious voice in any debate and could certainly share the stage with the likes of a Ron Paul or Rick Santorum. Embedded below is Roemer’s closing statement in which he outlines his key issue – getting big money out of the political process. It will be fascinating to see how many $100 contributions Roemer secures if he’s allowed to participate in the next televised debate.
