Willie Nelson Endorses Gary Johnson for President

Country music legend Willie Nelson has endorsed Republican Gary Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, for president, according to POLITICO.

Johnson, who had once admitted to smoking pot for medicinal purposes, received Nelson’s endorsement — and that of his recently-formed “Teapot Party” — precisely because of his views on legalizing marijuana.

As governor of New Mexico, Johnson repeatedly called for the legalization of marijuana — a position he maintained during the recent Republican presidential debate in South Carolina. “I advocate legalizing marijuana – control it, regulate, tax it,” he said in response to a question during the debate.

Johnson, 58, isn’t about to shy away from Nelson’s endorsement.

“I am truly gratified to have the endorsement of such an iconic entertainer, philanthropist, innovator and champion for individual rights as Willie Nelson,” he said in a statement published on the Teapot Party’s web site.

“Not only is he a superstar talent, he is a bold advocate for social change,” continued the long-shot GOP hopeful. “Americans are demanding the freedom and opportunity to pursue their dreams without interference from a heavy-handed government, and Willie Nelson lends a tremendous voice to those demands.”

The 77-year-old Nelson, who founded the Teapot Party shortly after being arrested last year in Sierra Blanca, Texas, for possession of marijuana, recently met with the former governor following a concert in the same state.

  1. Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster featuring Uncle Willie for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/vote-teapot-2011.html Drop in and let me know what you think!Your Comments

  2. Johnson doesn’t have a chance in 2012, but if he gets his name out there and tells the American people what he stands for. 2016 might be a different story for him. He would do better on the Liberal/Progressive side though; Republicans are not going to vote for him.
