Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley had some faint praise yesterday for Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who is quickly emerging as a favorite among the party’s panicked elite.
“Let me try to give you a thought that goes through my mind, that I haven’t said publicly — and that is kind of difficult, probably something I shouldn’t say,” the senator said with a chuckle during a conference call with reporters yesterday.
“Sometimes I hear Mitch Daniels, and I thought, maybe I ought to back him because it would be an opportunity to show that people who don’t have charisma could be elected president,” said Grassley.
The 77-year-old Grassley, a fixture in the U.S. Senate since 1981, later praised the Indiana governor’s record of accomplishment and said that his comments were meant to be “tongue in cheek.”
