Jack Davis, the cantankerous multimillionaire who’s spending millions on television ads as a third-party candidate in New York’s 26th district special election, has released a new television commercial called, “What’s at Stake.”
The 30-second spot, which shows a depressing and all-too-familiar scene repeated in kitchens across the district — and the entire country, for that matter — has generated some national attention, largely because of its all-too-familiar and brutal honesty.
POLITICO wonders if it might not be “the most depressing campaign spot ever.”
Davis, 78, who has steadfastly refused to participate in debates with his major-party rivals — Democrat Kathy Hochul and Republican Jane Corwin — denies that he’s a spoiler and really could care less if he siphons enough votes to swing the Republican-leaning district to Hochul.
There’s too much at stake, says Davis, who at varying times belonged to both major parties, but never quite fit in with either.
“You think I care about the parties? I’ve left both of the parties. They’ve left me. Now, here’s something you don’t hear other people say. The two parties, they’re owned by the corporations. You cannot trust them. You cannot,” he told Slate’s Dave Weigel.
Weigel’s excellent article on Davis is definitely worth a read.
The 26th congressional district spans the region stretching from the northeast suburbs of Buffalo to the western suburbs of Rochester. The election is Tuesday.
