Struggling to find a credible challenger to two-term Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, some Michigan Republicans have recently floated the name of radio talk show host Frank Beckmann, reports POLITICO’s David Catanese.
Beckmann, a nationally-renowned sportscaster and longtime voice of University of Michigan football, chuckled at the suggestion of running for the U.S. Senate.
“People make suggestions to you all the time,” he said on his radio program on Friday morning. “Don’t wait for an announcement any time soon,” he said. Beckmann added, however, that he would think about it.
The Michigan GOP has had difficulty landing a “big name” candidate in next year’s Senate race. Former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land have all taken their names out of consideration.
Congressman Thad McCotter’s name had recently surfaced as a possibility, but the folksy, guitar-playing lawmaker is now reportedly considering a presidential bid instead.
