Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer said yesterday that he’ll formally announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination later this month, probably during a trip to New Hampshire, site of the first-in-the-nation primary.
“I’m good at campaigning,” Roemer told a small crowd of supporters in Baton Rouge on Monday night. “I’ve just never run for president before and it takes structure. It takes organization and I’m slowly building that.”
Roemer, who has already made several trips to the early caucus and primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, told WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge that he’s now raised about $100,000 for his fledgling candidacy.
The former governor, who has made the corrupting influence of money in American politics the cornerstone of his long shot candidacy, has capped individual contributions at $100 per person and refuses to accept money from political action committees and other special interest groups.
Like former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, Roemer hasn’t been invited to participate in next Monday’s televised debate in New Hampshire sponsored by CNN, Manchester’s Union Leader and WMUR radio.
But he says he’s not discouraged.
“I’ll get my shot somewhere and sometime and I’ll be ready,” he said confidently.
