A statistically meaningless and mildly amusing footnote from the recent Marist College opinion poll in the Republican race for President shows openly gay activist and political consultant Fred Karger leading libertarian-leaning former Governor Gary Johnson. But just barely, and neither campaign is likely to be happy with the numbers.
The Marist poll shows former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney leading the pack at 19%, ahead of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who polled 13%. Then, skipping over 7 or 8 better known candidates, we get to former Senator Rick Santorum at 1%.
He’s followed by Karger and Johnson — both men polling below 1%.
The poll lists Karger ahead of Johnson, and looking at the data it seems that he slighly out-performed the former New Mexico governor in several categories. For example, Karger recieved a full 1% of the vote among self-identified Tea Party supporters, while Johnson was the choice of “less than 1%” of Tea Party voters.
Among surveys taken during the poll’s second phase of interviews, Karger’s 1% was good enough to tie him with Gingrich, Hunstman and Santorum — and again put him ahead of Gary Johnson.
Former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer and former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore were not included in the polling. Both are currently exploring bids.
