Americans for Rick Perry, a 527 organization, is pushing a write-in effort for Texas Gov. Rick Perry in next month’s Ames Straw Poll, according to POLITICO.
The nascent effort, quietly launched on Facebook, is intended to encourage potential Perry supporters to participate in the August 13 straw poll.
On July 23, the Iowa GOP’s state central committee is expected to vote on whether Perry’s name will be included on the straw poll ballot.
Earlier this month, Americans for Rick Perry hired Craig Schoenfeld, the former Iowa executive director of Newt Gingrich’s campaign, to help build support for the Texas governor in the Hawkeye State.
Perry, who isn’t expected to make a decision about his candidacy until later this summer, has been calling potential Republican supporters in Iowa for the past few weeks. Perry’s calls to Iowans have reportedly included such prominent Republicans as U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, House Speaker Kraig Paulsen and Scott County Republican chairwoman Judy Davidson.
Moreover, Perry told the Des Moines Register last week that he’s “getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do.”
