Newly minted Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson’s campaign appears to have collected about $42,000 over the weekend. Playing on the fact that January 1 is the former governor’s birthday, his campaign put up a splash page on the GaryJohnson2012.com website asking people to donate as a birthday present. While it’s a microscopic sum when compared to the amounts raised online by Ron Paul and other Republican contenders in this cycle, the speed at which Johnson was able to casually raise that much money suggests he’ll be one of the most financially potent Libertarian candidates in history.
Thus far, the campaign site reports that 349 individuals have donated $41,866 over the holiday weekend. Unlike the more traditional “money bombs” setup by other candidates, the Johnson fundraiser had no stated goal or specific target to shoot for.
Former senator Rick Santorum, the flavor of the moment in the GOP race, is also conducting a fundraising push this weekend. Starting on December 28, his Iowa Surprise money bomb has collected over $257,000 in online donations, thus far.
