Trailing badly in the delegate count and with his campaign virtually broke, Newt Gingrich had all but admitted defeat over the weekend. Now, he’s hoping for a miracle comeback.
In the wake of Rick Santorum’s decision to bow out of the presidential race, the former House Speaker has taken to Twitter to declare himself “the last conservative standing” in the Republican nominating contest. Like Boris Yeltsin standing atop a digital tank, Gingrich has been feverishly using his social networking presence to whip up his supporters since news of Santorum’s decision hit the wire.
Gingrich tweeted: It is now a 2 person race. Donate now at http://newt.org/donate for the last conservative standing. #tcot #withNewt
He then began thanking supporters individually, and in groups, for their tweets of encouragement and soon began recognizing the twitter accounts of supporters who had offered financial contributions in the last few hours.
“This is the last stand for conservatives,” the former Speaker said in one of his latest messages. “Donate now at http://newt.org/donate if you believe a conservative is best suited to take on Obama.”
Gingrich has nearly 1.5 million followers on Twitter.
