Well, Rick Santorum has bowed out of the presidential race, but Newt Gingrich isn’t going anywhere. In fact, the former Speaker seems to be hoping that Santorum’s departure will bring new life into his own campaign.
“I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice,” Gingrich said in a statement. “I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa. We know well that only a conservative can protect life, defend the Constitution, restore jobs and growth and return to a balanced budget.”
Coasting on fumes, the Gingrich campaign was focusing on tiny Delaware (which votes April 24) as well as several southern states that vote in May, hoping against hope to expand their delegation and force a brokered national convention.
Visitors to Newt.org are now taken directly to the donation page, though it’s hard to imagine that many people will open their wallets for what is likely a lost cause.
