Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler is hitting the air with a new ad aimed at turning around his struggling campaign. The spot touts the recent endorsement of sitting U.S. Senator, and fellow independent, Angus King.
“We need a 21st century governor for a 21st century economy,” says King in the ad. “The reason I am here today is that I think Eliot Cutler is the best of the three, and will be the best governor.”
Culter, who finished a close second in the 2010 Maine governor’s race, is currently polling in a distant third place this time around. A Rasmussen Reports survey taken earlier this month showed Cutler at 15%, behind incumbent Republican Paul LePage (39%) and Democratic challenger Mike Michaud (43%). But don’t count Cutler out, he was polling at only 11% in surveys conducted in early September of 2010, and most polls had him trailing by 10% or more days before his near upset victory in the last election.
Make no mistake, Maine has a strong independent streak. If elected, Cutler will be the state’s third independent governor. The second was Angus King, who served from 1994-2002 and came back to win a landslide victory for an open U.S. Senate seat in 2012.
