North Providence mayor Charles Lombardi has endorsed independent candidate Ernest Almonte in the race for Rhode Island State Treasurer. A former Auditor General for the Rhode Island General Assembly, Almonte is locked in a one-on-one race against Democrat Seth Magaziner.
The city of 32,000 residents is one of Rhode Island’s top 10 by population. Lombardi previously worked with Almonte during a financial crisis that rocked North Providence during the time Almonte was serving as Auditor General.
“Ernie gets what Rhode Island’s cities and towns are going through,” said Lombardi. “His financial expertise helped turn North Providence around, and we need someone with that financial experience in the Treasurer’s office. Ernie has always been a friend to North Providence, and has never shied away from giving realistic financial advice and assessments, as well as strategic recommendations for the future.”
“As Rhode Island’s Auditor General, I worked hand in hand with Mayor Lombardi to develop and approve a financial action plan for the town of North Providence,” said Almonte. “The leadership he exercised during that process is a big part of the reason North Providence is on stronger financial ground today. I am honored to receive the Mayor’s endorsement.”
Almonte was originally running as a Democrat, but opted to drop out of the primary and continue his campaign with no party affiliation. His campaign had approximately $233,000 on hand at the end of July.
