According to Alex Pappas of the Daily Caller, independent U.S. Senate hopeful Greg Orman of Kansas has added veteran Democratic consultant Mike Phillips to serve as a spokesman in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, a three-term incumbent who’s fighting for his political life.
Phillips, a veteran of former Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd’s failed bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, has worked for a number of Democratic candidates, including U.S. Senators Michael Bennet of Colorado and Connecticut’s Chris Murphy.
While Republican detractors claim that Phillips’ involvement in the campaign is further evidence that the surging independent is likely to caucus with Senate Democrats if he’s elected, Orman’s campaign was quick to remind those critics that his campaign staff includes a number of veteran GOP consultants, including campaign manager Jim Jonas and media liaison Sam Edelen.
Jonas, a longtime campaign consultant who has worked for various Republican candidates and causes over the past few decades, once produced radio and television spots for the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee. A former editor and reporter, Edelen has worked on numerous Republican mayoral and gubernatorial campaigns across the country.
The wealthy Orman, who made a fortune in a private equity partnership, has opened up a seven-point lead against the 78-year-old Republican incumbent in recent polls.
