Larry Pressler, an independent candidate for U.S. Senate in South Dakota, is within striking distance of victory. That’s according to a new poll out today from Survey USA.
The results give Rounds, a former South Dakota governor, the lead with 35%. Pressler, a former U.S. senator, takes 32% among likely voters, putting him within the poll’s margin of error for the lead. Democrat Rick Weiland trails with 28% and independent Gordon Howie, a former state legislator, draws only 3%.
If Weiland were to drop out of the race, as the Democratic nominee did in Kansas recently, Pressler would easily win the race. In such a potential match-up, Pressler would take 54% to 39% for Rounds.
While Pressler’s campaign has been a shoe-string affair, he only has $150,000 in the bank at this time, he’ll be getting some indirect help from the Democratic Senatorial Committee. The national Democratic party is dumping at least a million dollars into negative ads targeting Rounds, with the hope that either Weiland or Pressler emerges victorious on election night.
