The Republican Party of Ohio is taking Libertarian Chad Monnin seriously. As we wrap up the final days of the campaign, it seems that GOP is worried enough about Monnin to unleash a last minute flood of attack mail against his bid to take on an incumbent Republican legislator.
The postcards, which somehow suggest that Monnin is aligned with President Obama and that the President is somehow secretly funding the Monnin campaign. It’s pretty weak stuff, but the visuals of a photoshopped Monnin smoking cigars and lighting
Monnin is a self-made millionaire who has funded an aggressive Libertarian campaign with approximately $300,000 of his own money. Married with 3 children, he is a life-long Ohioan who spent 13 years in the U.S. Army before he was honorably discharged after sustaining an injury during a parachute jump.
He’s also a successful entrepreneur, who after leaving the military, helped co-found Mission Essential Personnel. MEP is a specialized staffing company that’s core business involved supplying specialized translators to Western interests in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The success of that company, which Monnin left day-to-day management of in 2009, is allowing him to largely self-finance his campaign for the state house.
“When Gov. John Kasich, Senator John McCain and Congressman Pat Tiberi were in my office, they said my company was amazing and doing great things for this nation and for this state,” Monnin said in an email to Ohio Watchdog. “But ever since I started questioning the establishment, I’m a war profiteer and a hypocrite.”
“Bush was president when I started the company, not Obama,” he continued. “I wrote the business plan while recovering from a back injury after a military parachute jump and I brought hundreds of jobs and millions of tax dollars to this state.”
The Ohio Republican Party has dumped at least $50,000 into these direct mailers to help bolster Republican incumbent Anne Gonzales.
“If Rep. Gonzales had ANY courage, I would have gladly discussed this during a debate but she refused to show up,” Monnin told Ohio Watchdog. “Why? Because she is a check-cashing puppet for the establishment and everyone knows it.”
