As the lone Republican brave enough to challenge Rick Scott, Rocky De La Fuente celebrated Independence Day with the launch of his campaign for U.S. Senate in Florida.
A successful entrepreneur and real estate developer, De La Fuente built a business empire that included 28 automobile dealerships, numerous assisted living facilities and several local banks. His current holdings include businesses and properties across the United States and in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Uruguay.
De La Fuente acknowledged that immigration will be one of his signature issues in this campaign, noting that “our nation needs comprehensive immigration reform that recognizes undocumented workers to be assets rather than liabilities.”
“Florida has a rich history of welcoming immigrants. The demographics of our state reflect a strong Latin influence that has grown over the years,” said De La Fuente. “I myself am a proud first-Generation American who loves this country for the opportunities it has provided for me.”
“We can secure our borders without abandoning the values upon which our nation was built,” the candidate added. “Furthermore, we must create a more intelligent, effective and efficient way of welcoming new immigrants and providing them with a clear path to citizenship.”
De La Fuente pointed out that, in recent weeks, it has been revealed that Rick Scott secured a tax credit of $600,000 for the federal contractor currently operating a prison-style compound containing 1,000 migrant children in Homestead.
“We cannot continue to be a country that locks families and children in detention centers indefinitely. Frankly, if anyone deserves to be confined to a cage, it’s the man who oversaw the largest Medicare fraud in this nation’s history,” said De La Fuente. “Rick Scott is a despicable, heartless criminal and this campaign is going to be a fight for the soul of the Republican Party.”
The campaign expects to begin airing radio and television ads in the coming weeks.
Finally, someone who is brave enough to stand up and declare Rick Scott for the robber baron he is. We seem to live in a nation of people who admire wealth more that how it got there. Murderers, thieves, shysters and bigots are held up as examples of “American” attitude. If being dishonest, taking bribes, belittling the helpless, outright lying and doublespeak are a sample of that American attitude, I want no part of it. My father too came to this country to improve his life, and wound up going back home to live life on his own terms after starting the first Hispanic Credit Union, being President of the Knights of San Juan and working closely with Richard J. Daley to insure the rights of Hispanics in Chicago. He and my mother raised ten children, purchased property, held several jobs at once and NEVER took a penny of welfare, and he never took a penny that he did not earn. THAT is the type of person I would like to see as governor of this state, no another blood-sucking, self-serving con-artist who blames immigrants for the malfeasance of the government itself.
