Country music pioneer Willie Nelson was honored by Vermont’s Bernie Sanders on Sunday, reports POLITICO’s Karin Tanabe.
Sanders, one of only two independent members of the U.S. Senate, presented Nelson with the 2011 Vermont Free Spirit Award in recognition of his support for the nation’s family farmers.

In presenting the award, Sanders called Nelson “an American hero” and “a leading supporter of family farmers in Vermont and across the nation.” The award, he said, was being given “in honor of your tireless support of our nation’s family farmers, and in honor of the genuine, inspiring spirit of freedom with which you live your life and create your music.”
The award was presented during a Willie Nelson concert in Essex Junction.
