Actor Alec Baldwin is reportedly thinking about running for mayor of New York City in 2013, according to several sources.
Baldwin, the star of “30 Rock,” has long toyed with the idea of launching a post-acting political career — a sort of second act, as he puts it — and Rep. Anthony Weiner’s publicly humiliating self-destruction may have provided his unlikely opening.
The disgraced Weiner had long been regarded as a frontrunner in the 2013 mayoral contest.
“Hey, maybe this changes the race. The dynamics have shifted,” Baldwin reportedly told one of his friends.
The 53-year-old Baldwin, an unapologetic liberal, has been sounding more and more like a potential candidate for the past several years.
“I don’t want to say this in an anti-elitist way, but we’ve had men who are Ivy League groomed running this country since 1988,” he said during a recent interview. “We’ve had 22 years of Yale and Harvard running this country right now, and the problems aren’t getting solved.”
