Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann, who will make a pair of television appearances tomorrow in advance of her formal declaration of candidacy on Monday — appearing on both CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday” — is running a 60-second radio spot in Iowa inviting supporters to a Sunday rally at the famous Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo.
“Iowa is not just another state on the presidential campaign trail,” the announcer says in the ad. “For Michele Bachmann, Iowa will always be home. Born and raised in Waterloo, Michele Bachmann has deep roots here, and our town holds a special place in her heart.”
Bachmann’s voice then cuts in, reminding listeners of her Iowa roots and personally inviting Iowans to the 5:30 event on Sunday, an informal meet-and-greet on the eve of her announcement.
“Let’s make history together in Waterloo as I launch my candidacy to become the next president of the United States,” she says.
According to her campaign web site, Bachmann is expected to officially declare her candidacy at Waterloo’s Snowden House on Monday morning. Bachmann was born in Waterloo and lived in the area until her family moved to Minnesota when she was 12.
After languishing in single-digits in most national polls, Bachmann has surged in the past few weeks. A Rasmussen Reports poll taken shortly after her participation in the June 13 Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire showed that support for the Minnesota congresswoman jumped to 19 percent, placing her in second place behind frontrunner Mitt Romney. Romney polled 33 percent in that national telephone survey of 1,000 likely Republican voters conducted the day after the New Hampshire debate.
